Rui Shanches
(Lisbon, 1954)

Studied at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual, Lisboa; Goldsmiths’ College, London (BA 1980); Yale University, New Haven (MFA 1982).

His first solo exhibition took place in 1984 at Gallery of Modern Art, SNBA, Lisbon and at Galeria Diferença, Lisbon. Since then Rui Sanches has had over forty-one solo exhibitions, namely a retrospective exhibition at the Gulbenkian Foundation (2001) and the show “MUSEUM” at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (2008), and took part in many group shows both in Portugal and abroad.

His work is represented in all the main Portuguese public collections and several international museums, among others: CAM – Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Serralves Foundation, Porto; Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp, MEIAC-Contemporary Art Museum, Badajoz; EDP Foundation, Lisbon; Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento; Coleção Berardo Museum, Lisbon and Coleção Cachola, Elvas.

In 2008 he was awarded the AICA-Ministério da Cultura Prize.
